PH Air Force fifth, sixth supersonic jets arrive today

Arrival ceremony for Philippine Air Force’s fifth and sixth South Korea-made FA-50PH “Fighting Eagle” (005 and 006) was conducted today in Clark Air Base, Pampanga. The ceremony started at 11 am. FA-50PH with tail number 005 touched down 11:05 am, while 006 touched down 11:07.

The Philippines has 12-plane order from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) worth PHP18.9 billion. FA-50PH aircraft are Mach 1.5 capable.

The 1st and 2nd FA-50PHs arrived in November 2015, while the 4th and 3rd arrived a year after. The remaining six aircraft on order are expected to be delivered within this year.

PAF’s FA-50PHs were recently blooded in combat during the surgical air and artillery strike that wounded Abu Sayyaf Group commander Isnilon Hapilon last January 26.

The FA-50PH has a top speed of Mach 1.5 or one-and-a-half times the speed of sound and is capable of being fitted air-to-air missiles, including the AIM-9 “Sidewinder” air-to-air and heat-seeking missiles, aside from light automatic cannons.

It will act as the country’s interim fighter until the Air Force gets enough experience in operating fast jet assets and budget allocation for more capable fighter aircraft. (Update)

Air Force now has six ‘Fighting Eagles’

With the delivery of additional two South Korean-made FA-50PH “Fighting Eagle” jets, the Philippine Air Force now has six supersonic aircraft that can reach the speed of Mach 1.5 (1852.2 km/hour) or 1.5 times faster than the speed of sound.

FA-50PH with tail number 005 touched down 11:05 am in Clark Air Base, while 006 touched down at 11:07, February 22.

The Philippine Air Force ordered 12 units of FA-50PHs from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) worth 18.9 billion pesos.

The 1st and 2nd FA-50PHs arrived in November 2015, while the 4th and 3rd arrived a year after. The remaining six aircraft on order are expected to be delivered within this year.

These aircraft will act as the country’s interim fighter until the Philippine Air Force gets enough experience in operating fast jet assets and budget allocation for more capable fighter aircraft.

    2. Caan.If Timor Leste has no experience with supersonic fighters, it would do well for them to start with turbo pop planes with CAS capability such as OV-10 or SF-260. MRF Program should be carefully planned and cannot be done in haste. The case of PAF is a good example. PAF used to fly supersonic fighters (F-5) but retired them 2005. It is only 2015 that we resumed flying supersonic fighters (after 10 years) again upon the arrival of FA-50s, but before our pilots can fly the new planes, they first must get proficiency in flying turbo pop planes, after that another proficiency in flying a more advance turbofan planes such as S211 or M-345. Only after such training can our pilots fly the new FA-50, and add to these the training our pilots got from KAI personnel, the manufacturer of FA-50. Budget is another consideration for such a program. FA-50 costs around $30 million per piece.

    3. Brunei and Timor Leste doesn't need any fighter jet. The country, population and economy(not income per capita) is too small to operate a full fledged jet.

    4. Kotori. Every country has a right to determine which defense materials they see appropriate for their use. IMO, they definitely need fighters to guard their airspace, but managing its procurement is something needs to be worked out by their financial managers.

    3. FA 50 is a good entry point for PH to regain the supersonic capability again, and it is not funny to laugh at their effort, as in the past ID had the similar situation where our old jetfighters were practically grounded because of no spare parts, even though at the end we keep improving ourselves, so will the PH !! By the way, to fight the southern rebels, things like super tucano work better than FA 50, as it is very agile at lower altitude and slower speed.

    1. Its not wise to paint a certain country in bad images. This will only made stereotypes among Asean worsening. Not every country is peacefull and united such as countries from scandinavia. Dont intervene other country affair by viral videos from a bad perspective and using religion to back you up.
